Arvind Subramanian is pro-growth, pro-reform economist

On Thursday, Subramanian was handed over the keys to the chief economic adviser's office in North Block, which is the command centre for Asia's third largest economy, a post which had been lying vacant for 13 months after Raghuram Rajan took over as governor of Reserve Bank of India.

Subramanian, who is the Dennis Weatherstone Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and Senior Fellow at the Centre for Global Development, walks into North Block at a challenging time for the economy, which has posted two successive years of sub 5% growth. But the "Madrasi", who speaks a bit of Hindi, as he described himself to reporters on Thursday, while announcing his appointment, is a staunch believer in the potential of the Indian economy.
