Rajnath pooh-poohs China warning

NEW DELHI: A day after China reacted sharply to government's plans to construct a border road along the McMohan Line in Arunachal Pradesh, home minister Rajnath Singh asserted that no country can warn a strong country like India.

"Today, no country can give warning to India. India has emerged as a strong country in the world. As far as India-China border issue is concerned, I think China should sit with India and resolve this issue," he told reporters on sidelines of NSG's 30th Raising Day function at Manesar on Thursday.

Singh was replying to a reporter's query seeking his comment on China's strong reaction to minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju's statement that a road network from Mago-Thingbuin in Tawang to Vijaynagar in Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh, would be constructed to match the robust infrastructure on the Chinese side.

"There is a dispute about the eastern part of the China-India border. Before final settlement is reached we hope that India will not take any action that may further complicate the situation," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lie had said in a statement from Beijing.

Only recently, the border forces of the two countries were engaged in a faceoff at Chumar in Ladakh that lasted a fortnight. The staredown coincided with Chinese President Xi Jingping's three-day visit to India in September.

A marathon flag meeting between the two armies facilitated an end to the stand-off.

Meanwhile, in his address at the NSG event on Thursday, Rajnath Singh called for joint effort at the international level to tackle terrorism. "Terrorism is not limited to one country... therefore, joint efforts should be made at the international level," the minister said.

Stating that there were "certain forces" who wanted to "destabilize peace and tranquility in the country", Singh said the country's security forces were fully equipped and capable to deal with terrorists and other anti-national forces.

He added that the government was planning to increase the number of female commandos in NSG, whose number stood at 25 at present. The induction of women commandos in the elite force began in 2003.

The home minister also paid tributes to the brave NSG commandos who sacrificed their lives, and appreciated the role played by the force in countering terrorism.
