HYDERABAD: Saina Nehwal recovered from a first game loss to beat Karin Schnaase of Germany 12-21, 21-10, 21-12 while PV Sindhu downed Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong 21-13, 22-20 in the Denmark Open Super Series Premier in Odense on Wednesday.
In a see-saw battle, top ranked Indian shuttler among men, Kidambi Srikanth, defeated Xue Song of China 21-15, 17-21, 21-18 but Parupalli Kashyap faced no such problems as he ousted England's Rajiv Ouseph 21-15, 21-18.
Seventh seed Saina stuttered in the first game against the world No. 31 German. Karin broke free from 11-8 to 16-8 before taking the first game at 21-12. After the change of courts, Saina found her range and was in full flow giving no chance to her opponent. She started with four straight points and widened the margin to 8-1 in no time. Thereafter, Saina gave no Karin no room to make a comeback. She will now face the winner of the match between Li Han of China and Minatsu Mitani of Japan.
Sindhu, who is in the top half of the draw, saved four game points in the second game to beat Yip. After having it easy in the first game against the veteran shuttler, Sindhu struggled in the second. Trailing 16-20, Sindhu went all out to earn six straight points to advance to the next round.
With the pullout of her potential second round opponent and world champion Carolina Marin of Spain, Sindhu may face a qualifier in the second round on Thursday.
Newly formed Indo-Russian duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Vladimir Ivanov, who made it to the mixed doubles main round through qualifiers, went down fighting against Yun Lung Chan and Ying Suet Tse of Hong Kong 21-18, 21-18 in the first round.
Later in the evening, Ashwini and her women's doubles part ner Jwala Gutta lost to Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek of the Netherlands 21-17, 21-15.
